Our active aging courses and programs are instructor-led, at various skill levels, for older adults to engage and connect physically, emotionally and socially. Activities include a variety of physical fitness classes for all levels of ability; educational programs, like learning a new language; and creative art and music classes. At Unison, there’s something for everyone!

Wellness Connection Centre

Unison’s Wellness Connection Centre aims to support the mental, emotional, and spiritual health of older adults. Mental health is vital to full body health and a healthy mind will set up an individual for success in their daily life.

We are constantly improving our services, creating, and assisting with a myriad of supports on a daily and weekly basis. Our programming includes group support as well as innovative peer connections and caregiver programming. As we grow our programs, we will offer individual care, guidance, and support for the robust well-being of our older adults.

Adult Day Program

The Unison Adult Day Program (ADP) is designed for adults over the age of 41 years who are living with health challenges and cannot safely stay on their own without support.

Elder Abuse Shelter & Outreach 

Elder Abuse is any action or inaction by a person in a position of trust that causes harm or distress to an older adult within the scope of emotional, financial, medication, physical, neglect or sexual abuse. The two most frequently identified and reported types of elder abuse in Canada are financial and emotional.

 If this is an emergency or someone you know is at immediate risk, please call 911.

Unison Elder Abuse Shelter  

Our 14 bed Elder Abuse Shelter is for individuals of any gender, aged 55 or older, who are actively escaping abuse. 

The Unison Elder Abuse Shelter offers individuals a safe place to stay while actively working with caseworkers to transition back into the community safely and sustainably.

Elder Abuse Response Team (EART) 

The Elder Abuse Response Team (EART) is a collaboration between Carya, Calgary Police Service, and Unison. This multidisciplinary team of social workers and police officers work together to identify, investigate, and support high risk and/or chronic cases of elder abuse. 

Our team is committed to reducing incidents of elder abuse and collaborates to: 

  • Respond to and investigate suspected cases of elder abuse. 
  • Provide support and guidance to abuse victims and their families. 
  • Assist other service providers working with abuse victims and provide information about elder abuse to professionals and organizations who work with older adults.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels – Medicine Hat – can be a welcome relief for anyone who is unable to make meals on their own, due to a variety of reasons, such as;  age related illness, mobility loss, disability, illness, recovery from surgery or to alleviate caregiver stress.  Meals on Wheels is available to provide proper nutrition to those who require assistance.  There is no minimum number of meals and no fee to cancel.

How do I Sign Up?

Please call the Meals on Wheels – Medicine Hat – hotline at 403-525-8885 between 8 a.m. – 4  p.m., Monday to Friday.  A coordinator will be happy to answer any questions and sign you up over the phone.

How Do I Get My Meals?

Hot meals are delivered between 9:30 a.m. and noon by our trained volunteers right to your door.  We offer service Monday through Friday, with frozen meals being delivered for the weekends and holidays, if desired.  Our volunteers will also deliver some cheer with a bit of conversation and a smiling face to all of the Meals on Wheels clientele.

What If I Have An Appointment?

Please let us know as soon as possible if you won’t be home on your specified delivery date.  We would appreciate at least 2 days’ notice for any absences; including medical appointments and vacations.  Unless prior arrangements have been made, if the driver finds that you are not home during your delivery time, your meal will be returned to us, and your account will still be billed.  Please call the Meals on Wheels hotline at 403-525-8885 as soon as possible for any cancellations or amendments to your delivery schedule.

What is the Menu Like?

The menu is prepared monthly and can be found on our website.  Meals are different for each day of the month and you may choose either a weekly schedule (for example, every Tuesday and Thursday) or you may make selections according to the menu.  Unfortunately, at this time, we can only make special considerations for allergies and cannot accommodate celiac, vegan or minced food diets.

Who Makes the Meals?

Meals are different for each day of the month and you may choose to order daily, weekly (for example, every Tuesday and Thursday) or make selections for specific days in the month.

How Much Will it Cost?

Meals are set at a flat rate of $10.00 per meal as of August 1, 2022.
You are welcome to order as many or as few meals as you require based on your own needs.  If you are low-income, you may qualify for subsidy.  Please call the Meals on Wheels hotline at 403-525-8885 for more information.

How do I Pay?

Meals are billed monthly and you may pay in person at the Veiner Centre, e-transfer using the email – Info@VeinerCentre.com or mail a cheque to Meals on Wheels, c/o Veiner Centre, 225 Woodman Ave SE. Invoices are sent out at the end of each month, either by mail or email.  *Delivery drivers DO NOT accept payments.

Elder Abuse Outreach

Elder Abuse is any action or inaction by a person in a trusting relationship that causes harm and distress to an older adult within the scope of emotional, financial, medication, physical, and sexual abuse or neglect.

Elder Abuse Response Team (EART)

Working since April 2011 to support older adults who have experienced abuse, the Elder Abuse Response Team (EART) -- a collaboration between Carya, Calgary Police Service, and Unison -- provides support to older adults who have experienced abuse.

The EART is a multidisciplinary team of social workers and police officers that work together to investigate high risk and/or chronic cases of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, psychological abuse, financial exploitation, neglect, and abandonment that affect older adults.

Our team is committed to reducing incidents of elder abuse and collaborates to:
