Position: Shelter Social Worker Summer Student
Salary: $15 per hour
Duration of Employment: From 13 June to 5 August 2022

Job Summary:
Kerby Centre is looking to hire a Social Service Worker student or youth to work at the Kerby Shelter for abused seniors. The youth will support the Shelter team and seniors in the community by attending to calls on our Elder Abuse Resource Line (EARL). This includes screening calls, assessing risk and needs, providing information and referral support, providing advocacy as appropriate, and ultimately working toward a safe outcome for seniors in need who call us for support. In addition, this position would track calls for statistics and reporting purposes. The secondary responsibility for this position would be to plan, organize and implement dynamic programming for residents of the Shelter, under supervision by the Shelter Coordinator. This would be full time working physically on-site at the Shelter.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Answering the Elder Abuse Resource Line (EARL): The youth will be required to provide crisis support, information, and referrals by telephone and in person (in person for shelter residents living on site, as needed). In particular:
1. Must understand and implement a trauma informed approach when dealing with clients over the phone or in person.
2. Become familiar with community resources and be able to work with community partners in a professional manner.
3. Be familiar with the protocols of the Elder Abuse Response Team (EART) and make appropriate referrals to and from that team.
4. Track calls for statistics purposes and take on projects as directed.
Shelter Programming: the youth will work closely with the Shelter Coordinator and Community Outreach Program to plan and facilitate shelter programming. The youth would be encouraged to conduct a needs assessment to determine what programs and supports are lacking and work to fill gaps with approval from supervisors.

Projects can include:
1. Facilitating Trauma Education Sessions with the shelter residents,
2. Healthy Boundaries programming,
3. Facilitating exercise and healthy living programming,
4. Planning educational sessions pertaining to seniors resources in the community from various agencies, etc. using materials provided by Kerby Centre.

Requirements:
Applicants should meet the following criteria to be eligible for the summer student program:
– Age between 15 to 30 years (doesn’t have to be a student or going back to school)
– Be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident (International students are not eligible)
Skills that will be developed during the placement:
Hard skills that will include: screening calls, making referrals, interviewing and assessment, logging statistics, engaging in research, linking callers to appropriate resources, rapport building/customer service, and program planning.
Soft skills to include: listening, communication, team work, self-awareness, emotional intelligence, problem solving, advocacy, and general organizational skills.

Working Hours:
Summer students are required to work 8 weeks, 35 hour/week. Hours will be 8am to 4pm or 8:30am to 4:30pm including a one hour of lunch break.

Position: Graphic Designer Summer Student
Salary: $15 per hour
Terms of Employment: Summer position (May 30 to June 24)

Job Purpose:
Assist with planning and promotion of the Kerby Centre social activities including online
programming and preparing promotional material for the Expo being held in Fall 2022.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Activities include:
• For the Kerby Expo, the Graphic Designer will be involved in the development and
creation of: posters, programs, visitor/exhibitor surveys, promotional and advertising
material, scheduling, and timelines.
• Graphic design support for online programming
• Graphic design support for other Kerby Centre programs including template creation
• Assist with newspaper typesetting

Job Requirements:
• Eligible for Canada Summer Jobs grant (under the age of 30)
• Have knowledge of social media and web marketing
• Graphic design tools including Adobe Creative Cloud
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Detail oriented, organized and self-motivated

Working Hours:
Standard work hours are defined as Monday to Friday, on the basis of a 35 hour week. May be
required to work the occasional evening or weekend outside of standard work hours. Shift is
8:00 – 4:00 or 8:30 – 4:30.
