The Manager of Programs will coordinate and administer all aspects of the educational workshops and recreational activities for Medicine Hat seniors. This individual will be dedicated to supporting older adults to live well in their community. This position is based in Medicine Hat. You will report to the Veiner Centre Site Director.

Role Specifics

The Manager of Programs responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Planning:
  • Develop the programs and activities at the Veiner Centre and Strathcona Centre in accordance with Kerby’s mission.
  • Research and plan to have courses for 4 semesters each year. Courses include physical activity/active living, arts and crafts, fine arts, languages, finance, life planning, technology and special interest topics.
  • Manage the program operations at the Veiner Centre and Strathcona Centre.
  • Ensure current programs and services support the wellness of seniors.
  • Responsible for the overall budget of programs and services at the Veiner Centre and Strathcona Centre.
  • Act as a liaison for organized clubs and provide assistance in development of new clubs, when applicable.
  • Develop a program evaluation framework to assess the strengths, weaknesses and identify areas of improvement.
  • Establish room schedules each semester to effectively use the centres’ space.
  1. Staffing the program:
  • Consult with the Veiner Centre Site Director on the recruitment and hiring of instructors for all required courses and programs.
  • Manage the programs staff and oversees the recruitment, on-boarding and supervision at the centres.
  • Provide training to staff and volunteers on the programs and services offered.
  • Liaise with the Kerby accounting team in regards to contracts and payment of instructors, special projects and other expenses incurred.
  • Ensure instructor files will be kept confidential and filed in accordance with Kerby policies.
  • Supervise program volunteers
  1. Controlling the program:
  • Write program reports for sponsors, funders and management.
  • Ensure the program operates within the approved budget.
  • Keep up to date financial records for all programs.
  • Research program services opportunities and eligible grants.
  • Provide program service invoices to accounting for payment.
  1. Promoting the program:
  • Promote on social media: courses, drop-in activities and special projects offered at the centres.
  • Counsel individuals, families or caregivers regarding their options for courses/workshops/activities in Medicine Hat.
  • Promote programs through the development of proposals and networking.
  • Build relationships within the seniors community.
  • Build rapport with other organizations and educational institutions in Medicine Hat.
  1. Community Work:
  • Participate on committees when asked or when interested.
  1. General:
  • Maintain confidentiality about clients and Kerby Centre businesses.
  • Wear attire appropriate to the position.

Qualifications/Expertise

 University degree in related field (e.g. Education, Recreation Management, Kinesiology) or equivalent experience.

  • A minimum of one year social media experience is considered an asset.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Knowledge of program management
  • Knowledge of target population and the issues related to the program area.
  • Knowledge of active living programs for seniors is considered an asset.

We have a permanent full-time position available for a Food Services Supervisor in Medicine Hat!

If you have experience in the food service industry and believe in providing quality food to seniors, then we may have the perfect role for you. We are looking for someone who has a passion for engaging with seniors and are dedicated to their wellbeing.

The Food Services Supervisor is responsible for managing all aspects of the Food Services operation in Medicine Hat. You will ensure that the nutritional needs of seniors are met, while working in collaboration with Meals on Wheels. This role will also require you to manage a team, set annual goals with your team, work in conjunction with Meals on Wheels, participate in strategic planning sessions and be responsible for the overall financial health of the service area. In addition, the role provides you with the opportunity to establish networks with Meals on Wheels, the community and to expand in various food service areas.

This position is based in Medicine Hat. You will report to the Veiner Centre Site Director.

Role Specifics

The Food Services Supervisor responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Oversee the kitchen on a day to day basis:
  • Manage members of the food preparation team including staff and volunteers.
  • Decide what dishes to service and adjust orders to meet food availability, client request and dietary needs. Meal preparation must consider dietary restrictions, portion control and must include protein, starch and vegetable component daily.
  • Ensure existing food programs are accessible to seniors that have special dietary needs. As well, develop new programs to meet the changing needs for clients.
  • Ensure quality and presentation are prioritized to encourage returning customers.
  • Assist in food preparation, as required.
  • Responsible for ordering food and other kitchen supplies.
  • Complete a weekly report of revenue versus expense to monitor and adjust expense based off trends throughout the year.
  • Establish and follow a monthly budget. Deliver all services based on the budget.
  1. Personnel Management:
  • Responsible for the scheduling of volunteers and staff.
  • Responsible for the supervision of staff including:
  1. Regular meetings to discuss performance
  2. The keeping of supervision notes
  3. Evaluation on an annual basis
  • Ensuring volunteers are trained in relevant kitchen duties.
  • Maintain all records in accordance with Kerby Centre policies, procedures and legislative requirements.
  1. Food Safety:
  • Responsible for ensuring that all people working with food are following safe sanitary practices and passed the Alberta Health Services Food Safety Basics course.
  • Establish and train staff and volunteers on site specific safe food handling, safe storage and sanitization/disinfection protocols.
  • Responsible for organization and cleanliness of all stations where food is prepared, consumed or served.
  • Ensure all kitchen equipment is in good working order. Close equipment and ensure notifications are sent or repairs are made if not in good working order.
  • Complete site monitoring as required. This may include temperature checks, disinfection records and pest control.
  1. Project Coordination:
  • Meals on Wheels: work with the Meals on Wheels Program Coordinator to provide a seamless meal delivery service. This includes but is not limited to:
  1. Consultation on nutritional components of meals including dietitian consults
  2. Specialize meals for health issues (diabetic for example) or religious constraints
  3. Scheduling of volunteers
  4. Packaging
  5. Food delivery
  6. Safe food handling
  7. Fostering positive relations between kitchens, volunteers and clients
  8. Emergency protocols
  • Develop other food programs such as food rescue and sharing kitchens.
  • Collaborate with the Kerby Fund Development department to support food donations, fundraisers and annual food drive events.
  1. Marketing:
  • Work with the Veiner Centre Site Director and the Kerby Senior Manager of Marketing and Communications to develop a marketing strategy for all components of food services.
  • Collaborate with Meals on Wheels to promote and advertise the program.
  • Utilize social media platforms to promote the food programs at the Veiner and Strathcona Centre.
  • Network with Medicine Hat communities to expand in various food service areas.
  • Create and update the cafeteria ads, as required.
  • Create custom catering guides

Qualifications/Expertise

 2 year community college diploma or equivalent experience.

  • Professional culinary diploma or industry equivalent.

Additional Training:

  • Food Safety and Sanitation Course
  • Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission ProServe Course
  • First Aid and CPR
  • WHMIS

Computer Proficiency:

  • Basic level: word, excel and outlook
  • Must be able to use online food ordering systems

The Site Director will manage and support the long-term vitality and growth of the seniors’ community in Medicine Hat, by overseeing the Veiner and Strathcona Centres. You will be responsible for all operations in Medicine Hat, managing a team of regional staff and providing ongoing support to the Veiner and Strathcona Centres. This position is based in Medicine Hat and will report to the Regional Director of Southern Alberta.

Role Specifics

The Veiner Centre Site Director responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Leadership:
  • Act as a senior leader within the organization. Demonstrating the values and philosophy of the agency and fostering an effective culture among employees and volunteers.
  • Participate as an active member of the Senior Leadership team.
  • Assist in the development of long and short term strategies that support Kerby Centre’s vision and mission.
  • Translate the strategic priorities into operational plans and monitor progress.
  • Responsible for the growth and development of new initiatives to assist seniors in a changing social, economic and technological environment.
  • Create networks within the seniors’ community of Medicine Hat.
  • Work closely with the Regional Director of Southern Alberta and Kerby managers to develop the Veiner and Strathcona Centres.
  1. Facilities Oversight:
  • Develop operational and strategic plans as it pertains to Medicine Hat.
  • Track and maintain all financial transactions and records as it pertains to operations in Medicine Hat.
  • Monitor physical operations including working with the property manager.
  • Ensure policies and procedures are in place to maintain consistency in programs and services offered at the Centre.
  • Maintain the health and safety of all seniors and personnel. Be in compliance with safety protocols.
  • Supervise and support personnel at the Centre’s.
  • Be a liaison for Medicine Hat and the Kerby Centre team.
  1. Personnel Administration:
  • Interview and select personnel in accordance with Kerby Centre policies.
  • Manage all departments and oversee the recruitment, on-boarding and orientation process at the Veiner and Strathcona Centres.
  • Provide training to all staff and managers at the Centre to ensure consistent practices in departments.
  • Conduct performance evaluations of employees as per Kerby Centre policies.
  • Track vacation and sick time accruals to ensure balances are in accordance with Kerby policies.
  1. Operational and Strategic Planning:
  • Submit area budgets in a timely manner to the Kerby Senior Manager of Finance.
  • Oversee the development of the Meals on Wheels program.
  • Manage the Meals on Wheels program coordination, kitchen operation, meal planning, training, staffing and quality control.
  • Work in collaboration with the Senior Manager of Facilities to develop the food services program.
  • Coordinate and schedule the Meals on Wheels distribution in Medicine Hat.
  • Prepare operational plans in conjunction with department staff.
  • Brainstorm innovative programs. Work with the Kerby Fund Development team to research possible sources of funding. Make applications for funding when necessary in consultation with the Kerby team.
  • Participate in agency strategic planning, when applicable.
  • Establish and comply with all safety protocols.
  • Work with the Kerby Senior Manager of Facilities to ensure all insurance, safety and regulatory regimes are met.
  • Take on calls, when necessary.
  • Prepare staff schedules in advance to ensure Medicine Hat Centre needs are met.
  1. Community Liaison:
  • Build connections with local communities including non-profits, community organizations and businesses.
  • Work collaboratively and build on community projects.
  • Be an ambassador for the Veiner and Strathcona Centres in a professional manner and while promoting awareness to the seniors community.
  1. General:
  • Maintain confidentiality about clients and Kerby Centre businesses.
  • Demonstrate professional behavior and appearance appropriate to the position.

Qualifications/Expertise

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Non-profit Management, Psychology, Community Development or equivalent. An MBA may also be considered with non-profit experience. A bachelor’s degree with at least 5 years’ at a management level in a human service environment or other non-profit may be considered.
  • Demonstrated success in managing an organization or a large program is required.
  • Computer proficiency: must have intermediate level computer proficiency and some type of social media experience.
