Good nutrition is essential for maintaining optimal health and independence of seniors.

In 1999, recognizing that the ability to access food can be a major obstacle in achieving a healthy diet, a team of seniors' caregivers and professionals conducted a needs assessment. The purpose was to collect information on food shopping assistance needs of community-dwelling seniors in Calgary.

The needs assessment clearly indicated the need for a range of community-based services to assist seniors in accessing food.

A steering committee of community partners was struck following the needs assessment, to direct future activities of the project. The steering committee consisted of representatives of Kerby Centre for Seniors, Meals on Wheels, City of Calgary - City Links, Calgary Seniors' Resource Society and Calgary Health Region.

Since 1999, the steering committee, called the Enhancing Seniors Nutrition Initiative (ESNI), through collaboration with a variety of partners has completed several activities resulting in some well-accessed resources. Resources developed as a result of the activities of ESNI continue to be utilized and benefit Calgary's community-dwelling seniors.
